Intel iMac wireless connection slowdown with WPA/TKIP

Since the day I got my new Intel iMac, I experienced problems when using it on my wireless network at home. On first connect, web pages tended to load very slowly, and wireless network speed was not up to par with my Windows or Linux machines. I searched the Internet for users with similar problems, and found out that I was obviously not alone.

It seems that the Apple’s new Intel machines have some issues with wireless LANs using WPA/TKIP. Users have reported that switching from WPA/TKIP to no encryption (not recommended!) or to WPA2/AES fixed their wireless connectivity problem. Since I have configured my wireless router and my iMac to use WPA2 with AES, i.e. “WPA2-Personal”, everything is working fine and as expected.

Enabling WPA2-Personal (AES) on Mac OS X

If you are still having problems, this short checklist might help you:

  • Update your Internet router’s firmware (since firmware 28.04.07 released on July 20, 2006, my Speedport 501V router works flawlessly with the Intel iMac)
  • Is your Mac compatible with WPA2/AES regarding hardware (e.g., Airport Express) and software?
  • Is your DNS server properly configured and responds fast enough? Slow initial connect times are sometimes caused by incorrect DNS settings or slow/defunct DNS servers.
