As a suggestion, you could have a look at the <a href="http://portal.acm.org/" rel="nofollow">ACM Portal</a> and find out what has already been done in your working area and identify possible starting points for your own project. Web search personalization is a large subject, so you should easily find an area you're comfortable with.
